Are you an eco-worrier or an eco-warrior?

FOR PLANET AND PEOPLE

Are you spinning around in circles!?

Bethia: I recently had a chat with an old friend about the eco worrier/warrior’s dilemma. See if this sounds familiar to you. You’re doing your weekly shop - you have your ethical consumer ‘hat’ on. Each purchase must tick the right boxes - organic, plastic free, sustainably sourced, palm oil free, free range, pasture-fed, locally produced, small business, fair trade, rainforest alliance… before you know it, you’re spinning in the aisles totally unable to buy anything because there are just TOO many Important Issues to keep in mind.

Circles don’t help though because circles don’t go anywhere. At Planet and People, we think our trajectory is the thing to be focusing on. What’s our overall direction - are we making steps towards a more planet friendly existence? Are we making small and permanent changes as and when we can? Are we getting educated and clued up on what the issues really are? Are we passing on our new understanding to our kids who are watching how we live today to inform how they will live in the future? This is not to overwhelm… but hopefully to encourage. Big issues can be overwhelming and the climate crisis is certainly that. But typically overwhelm makes us stuck and inactive because we don’t know which way to turn or what to do next.

If you care about the way you live and how it impacts the planet then you can be encouraged - you’re on a good path. Just keep going.

March’s Planet Action Kit is all about growing food - a seed can be such a tiny start and seemingly so insignificant. But when you factor in all the multitude of damaging effects that our food industry has on our planet, then that seed is a BIG deal. If it sparks a lifelong passion for planting in a child then it’s a BIG deal!

FOR PLANET AND PEOPLE is a weekly blog conversation by ‘Planet & People’ to reflect our values and behaviours and encourage open conversation on topical eco-issues.

We are the creators of 'Planet Action Kit', inspiring kids to LOVE the Earth. PAK is an educational resource and subscription activity box providing personalised learning resources engaging budding planet-friendly kids. The activities focus on the four main themes: Love, Observe, inVolve and Enjoy and are centred around matters of environment and sustainability.
