Jess: As two independent women, neighbours and friends with young children and a passion for teaching the next generation about being more environmentally friendly, this year, we [Jess Carter & Bethia Stevenson-Paul] have worked against the odds to develop this positive planet project. Born out of lockdown we adapted the idea for an eco-workshop series to accommodate children without the limits of geographical and lockdown restrictions and have just launched the 'Planet Action Kit'.
We gave ourselves six months and what started off as GROWbox has become Planet & People, the best of all our thoughts, inspirations and dreams for a brighter, more eco-friendly future - inspiring kids to LOVE the Earth. This simple message is clear and so very important for us all. Our home, this blue ball hurtling through space and time, is a wonder, a beauty and a gift that we need to restore, maintain and protect to support human life as we know it. This rich paradise is being plundered and is at a tipping point. The future is in our hands and together with the next generation, we are ambassadors for change. Young, fresh, innovative and resilient minds are needed to pick up the pace and protect this place for the good of mankind.
Our main product, the ‘Planet Action Kit’ (PAK), is a one-stop activity subscription box. Centred around LOVE, the themes: Learn, Observe, inVolve and Enjoy closely support the National Curriculum and are in line with Montessori, Steiner and other alternative learning pathways. Designed by a teacher and ecologist team, PAK is the ideal accompaniment to a home learning journey and as a fun gift for Christmas. It provides fun for all the family with simple crafts, toys, inspirational stories, quizzes and cartoons, it is colourful and upbeat. Whilst providing educational content it is a far cry from school and allows flexibility in the way it is used and enjoyed.
On top of all this, we work tirelessly to ensure that the product is as eco-friendly as possible and the props are sustainably and ethically produced. We try where we can to support local small businesses and make every effort to reduce the amount of waste in the PAK. Packaging is kept to a minimum and is recyclable or compostable, seeds are often organic and we take the time to list the eco-credentials on each box as well as the skills we hope to nurture.
With a reasonable following and a tight support network of champions and ambassadors we're really eager to make this work. This is our passion project, our legacy, our enthusiasm and our experience all wrapped up in a monthly package for you and your kids to be inspired by. Always looking to improve, collaborate and build capacity and community, we give back wherever we can and plan to do more as we grow - we have plenty of ideas in store.
